Silver Creek board approves policy updates, multiple personnel actions and minutes; hires middle-school assistant football coach

The Silver Creek School Corporation Board of Trustees approved a package of routine actions at its Aug. 12 meeting at Silver Creek Elementary School, including the second reading of policy updates, standard personnel actions under the consent agenda, and the separate appointment of a middle-school assistant football coach.

Second reading of policy updates: The board approved the second reading of a set of policy updates that the administration said were primarily driven by changes in state law and technical revisions. Dr. Briggs told the board the packet contained 25 policies for review; 15 required new language to comply with state statute and the remainder were technical revisions. The motion to approve the second reading passed 5–0 (motion by Miss Franklin; second by Mister Basham).

Policy 5461—credit for courses completed before grade 9: Board members discussed one policy in more detail. Policy 5461, which addresses high-school credit earned in middle school, was revised to allow students who completed a high-school credit course in middle school to retake that course in high school and, if they choose, replace the middle-school grade with the high-school grade; the district will require an opt-in/opt-out form to be submitted during the student's ninth or tenth grade year. The board also agreed to grandfather current juniors and seniors so they would not lose previously earned credit because of the change. Dr. Briggs said the district will use a preapproval form for the process. The second reading and approval of policy updates, including the revised language for policy 5461, passed 5–0.

Consent agenda, minutes and personnel: The board approved multiple routine items on the consent agenda, including finances over $10,000 (items 1–3), donations (items 1–2), certified and classified personnel appointments, resignations and leaves as listed in the packet, and various requests for approval (items 1–5). The board also approved minutes from the July 15 regular meeting and the July 22 executive-session meeting. The consent agenda and minutes approvals passed by recorded voice votes of 5–0. Dr. Briggs called attention to several personnel title corrections to align agenda language with approved position-control records.

Appointment of Miles Rountree: Miles Rountree was removed from the consent agenda and brought forward as a separate action because of its classification as a coaching appointment. The board approved the appointment of Miles Rountree as assistant football coach at Silver Creek Middle School, position-control number 02-2996, effective July 28, 2025. The motion to approve Rountree's appointment was made by Miss Franklin and seconded by Mister Groen; the chair announced the vote carried "4 0 1," which the board recorded as four voting in favor and one not voting/absent.

Other routine business: The board approved a procedural motion to adopt emergency revisions to the meeting agenda that updated several personnel titles (motion by Mister Groen; second by Miss McDaniel) by a 5–0 vote. The board concluded its meeting and voted to adjourn 5–0.
