Commission approves $10,000 for ‘Light Up Muncie’ holiday event

The Muncie Redevelopment Commission approved a $10,000 request on Aug. 21 to support Light Up Muncie, the city’s December tree-lighting event that will add a nighttime "lit parade."
Amber Green, communications director for the city who serves on the Light Up Muncie committee, described the event and the request. "Formally it has been the Christmas tree lighting. We are planning to add a lit parade to this event this coming year and hopefully in the future years as well," Green said. She explained a lit parade requires that parade entries be illuminated other than by headlights (for example, Christmas lights on floats, cars or displays).
Green said the city will host the event at the Canon Commons tree lighting, with musical acts, partners from Ball State and Ivy Tech, and vendors and food trucks. She said the event falls on the first Thursday in December and that some historic holiday vendors will be indoors to accommodate weather.
Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the $10,000 request. Staff said the funding will come from the MRC general fund (final fund coding will be confirmed with staff).
