Coffee County committee discusses work-from-home policy, defers formal action

At a meeting of the Coffee County Policy and Procedure Committee on Aug. 18, members discussed a proposed work-from-home policy without taking formal action.

The committee’s discussion centered on cybersecurity risks and on which departments need remote-access capabilities. Committee member Andy said he wanted “something from each department” explaining how employees would log in from home and what vulnerabilities vendors identify. Cindy, who described her office’s technical setup, said her office maintains five laptops provisioned so staff can remotely access case-management software in emergencies and that access is limited by firewall and VPN protections. Jenny Anthony and other members raised concerns about routine after-hours work, compensation and whether a written countywide policy was necessary.

Committee members repeatedly described remote access as a rare, task-specific need — for example, to notify the public about weather-related court changes or to handle emergency scheduling. Cindy said remote access in her office is restricted so that when employees are connected to the case-management system they cannot use other internet services simultaneously.

Rather than draft a final policy immediately, members agreed to gather more information. The committee asked Heather Shelton (not present) to send a request to department heads asking each department and its software vendors to describe how employees would log in from home, what protections are in place, and how often remote access would be needed. Several members said the committee may decide no countywide policy is required beyond existing department-level discretion.

No motion or formal vote on a work-from-home policy was taken. The committee identified the item as continuing business to be revisited after staff returns vendor and department responses.
