Sawyer County highway department details bridge grant applications, equipment repairs and paving work

The Sawyer County highway department summarized recent work and upcoming grant applications, including completed paving projects, equipment maintenance and several bridge funding applications that carry substantial local shares.
A department representative reported brushing work on County W, shoulder work and patching throughout the county, and a completed three-mile paving section from North Pole Landing to Landing Restaurant. The report noted a new three-way intersection at New Post with stop signs and stop bars recently installed to improve safety and visibility.
The department’s mastic machine experienced an engine failure early in the season and was sent to Milwaukee for engine replacement; staff said the turnaround was about one week and the machine has returned to service. The department is using the machine on a one-mile stretch for the state and is currently working in Douglas County; the mastic machine also is being rented to other counties, generating revenue.
Staff reported submitting six bridge applications to federal/state programs: five bridge replacements and one rehabilitation. One example cited was Hay Creek: the representative said the project’s local share of construction costs is $202,000 and that design costs add about $28,000. The department described the typical funding split as 80% federal, 20% local for eligible county bridges; town bridges may involve additional local cost-sharing arrangements, and the county expects to share a portion of local costs on several town bridge projects.
The highway representative also said the department is preparing applications for LRIP, ARIP and STP programs and a roundabout STP application on County Road B. The ARIP program was described as part of a state allocation for local small structures. Staff said the department has been reevaluating plow routes, training additional paver operators (now three qualified operators), and planning maintenance including repainting fuel tanks in Hayward and Radisson and updating signage.
