EDON outlines growth strategy, limits on heavy water use and housing plans for Northern Nevada

Taylor Adams, president and CEO of EDON (Economic Development Authority of Northern Nevada), told the Good Morning Truckee audience that EDON is focusing on higher‑value industrial jobs, workforce development and entrepreneurial support while limiting recruitment of high water–use companies.

Adams said EDON’s assisted jobs averaged about $87,000 annually over the last 12 months and that the agency continues to diversify the region’s industrial base beyond logistics and gaming. He said EDON helped attract a South Korean life‑sciences company that is completing a $10,000,000 investment near the University of Nevada, Reno. Adams said his office also runs an annual Startup Week that registered roughly 1,800 attendees last year and now carries EO Global and Startup World Cup sanctions for pitch competitions.

On housing, Adams said EDON and private developers are preparing owner‑occupied starter communities to help younger workers access homeownership. He described a planned product line of low‑rise townhomes and small single‑family units with a target strike price between $285,000 and $315,000 and said the plan would include about 750‑unit phases, with a goal of 2,500 such units over the next three to five years.

Adams framed the strategy as one of diversification and quality: recruiting higher‑paying advanced‑manufacturing and tech jobs while supporting retention, expansion and local entrepreneurship. He repeatedly emphasized reliance on existing community assets and partnerships with education providers to prepare a workforce for higher‑skill employment. "Eighty percent of the jobs in a healthy economy should come from your existing business," he said.
