Board approves consent, personnel and operations items; several abstentions recorded on personnel votes

The Lorain City Board of Education on Aug. 11 approved a series of consent, personnel and operations items summarized below.

Consent and donations: The board approved agenda items 8.01–8.08 on a roll call vote. During the motion a staff member noted donor gifts referenced in the consent list, including $1,000 from Ohio State Eagles, $6,000 from American Legion Post 30 and $10,000 from Nordson Corporation.

Personnel items (9.01–9.09): The board moved and approved a package of personnel actions across agenda items 9.01 through 9.09. Several board members recorded abstentions on one or more personnel votes and stated the abstentions were due to relatives appearing on the personnel lists. Specifically, during discussion on item 9.02 one board member (Vincent Ferguson) said, "I have to abstain. My wife is on this list as my sister is," and another board member said they also had a relative and abstained. Recordings show at least two abstentions on certain personnel items and at least one abstention on others; the transcript indicates abstentions were declared orally by members who cited family relationships. The motions carried.

Operations items (10.01–10.36): The board approved items 10.01–10.36 on a roll call vote. Discussion included a change to the district’s payment‑in‑lieu‑of‑transportation process: staff explained that by using a contract the district can have the state reimburse the payment‑in‑lieu amounts, reducing the district’s net cost; staff estimated last year’s change would save about $33,000. A board member asked that the updated 2025–26 numbers be reflected in supporting materials; staff said the approval was for the process and that numbers would be updated.

Executive session: The board voted to move into executive session for A.2 (personnel and employment). The chair said no action would be taken on return.
