The facilities committee met twice in October, including site visits. Members reported new playground equipment funded with walkathon funds at Northfield Elementary (including a zip line), recently installed boilers and ongoing work on water-supply issues at the Palmer House. At Leighton Intermediate School the committee reviewed hallway and restroom lighting upgrades, security film, updated entry and exit doors by the gym and new concrete near the pavilion. The business manager, identified in the meeting as Todd Stewart, was thanked for spearheading some of those projects.
Curriculum advisory work is being aligned to the district's new strategic plan. Officials described efforts to create consistent curriculum maps across the three elementary buildings with vertical alignment from kindergarten through fourth grade, expand systematic use of data forms, and strengthen tier-2 academic interventions. The district also reported that the Cuyahoga Valley Career Center (CVCC) was again rated five stars on the Ohio report card and announced an upcoming craft show and college-night participation.
The Nordonia Schools Foundation reported fundraising and programs including the "One School, One Book" initiative at Northfield Elementary, the Knights Caring for Knights food drive (noted pickup of more than 1,200 pounds of food during a recent drive) and a planned Winter Arts Festival on Dec. 13 at the high school.
Board members praised administrators for a recent State of the Schools presentation highlighting district efforts. No formal votes were required for the informational committee reports.
