Council elects three to Industrial Development Board; confirms multiple reappointments across city boards

On Aug. 19 the Metropolitan Council elected three nominees to the Industrial Development Board after multiple rounds of voting and confirmed several mayoral and committee appointees across boards and commissions.
The Metropolitan Council elected Tequila Johnson, Nancy Van Reece and Laura Yankee to fill three vacancies on the Industrial Development Board (terms to expire Aug. 31, 2031) on Aug. 19, 2025. The committee that vetted nominees reported unanimous support for seven nominees; the full council held multiple rounds of voting to fill the three open seats and concluded with the named trio elected.
Chair Prepte reported the rules, confirmations and public elections committee had voted 7–0 in committee on the slate of seven nominees recommended for IDB consideration. The council then conducted repeated rounds of voting because multiple candidates were vying for more than one vacancy and state law does not set a specific threshold; the council used a simple majority of those voting (18 votes in that session) to determine winners in successive rounds. After several elimination rounds, the council elected Tequila Johnson and Nancy Van Reece in an earlier round and elected Laura Yankee in the final round.
In the nominations and confirmations section, the council referred a number of appointments back through the two-meeting committee process and confirmed reappointments advanced from committee. Among confirmations the council approved reappointments and appointments including Topanga Byers (Metro Action Commission), Gary Burke and Jane Landers (Historic Commission), Reverend Shane Scott (Hospital Authority Board), Dr. Amy Crawford Charlton (Human Relations Commission), Hazel Smith (Nashville Entertainment Commission), Fiona Halter Abbott (Stormwater Management Commission) and Catherine Hayes (Metropolitan Transit Authority). Committee reports on confirmations recorded unanimous committee support in most cases and the council confirmed the listed appointees on the floor.
The council also opened nominations for several internal leadership and representative posts — for president pro tempore, committee chairs and representatives to authorities such as the Traffic and Parking Commission and Metro Audit Committee — and scheduled those elections for the council meeting on Sept. 2, 2025, as part of the two-meeting process for council elections and confirmations.
The council clerk will follow up with nominators to collect supporting materials, and the chair reminded members that the council’s rules require two meetings for confirmations and elections for many boards and roles.
