Madison County to buy new election scanners using Secretary of State funds

The Madison County Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of new election scanning equipment at its Aug. 18 meeting, accepting staff’s recommendation to use funds available from the Mississippi Secretary of State to cover much of the cost.
Anita Ray, speaking to the board as a county elections official, said the county’s current scanners date to 2016 and that the proposed sales order is approximately $531,000. Ray told the board she confirmed with the Secretary of State — identifying Kyle Kirkpatrick — that the state still has $279,028.61 in HEPA funds available and that an additional $155,368.36 for election materials will be released to the county in September.
Ray said the Secretary of State’s process requires the county to purchase equipment first and submit proof to receive reimbursement. The board approved the purchase and the use of the available HEPA funds; supervisors voted aye on the motion.
The motion to buy the equipment was made and seconded during the meeting; the board’s recorded action was approval. County staff will complete the procurement and submit reimbursement documentation to the Secretary of State’s office as required.
