Shoreline agrees to buy 19004 Furlan's Way North for park expansion using King County conservation funds

The Shoreline City Council on Aug. 11 authorized the city manager to complete acquisition of a roughly 10,000-square-foot parcel at 19004 Furlan's Way North (King County tax parcel 728390-0521) to expand an existing park along the Aurora Corridor.
City staff said the parcel is adjacent to a parcel the city already owns and lies within an area identified through the city’s PROSA planning process as underserved for parkland in higher-density portions of the Aurora Corridor. Recreation, Cultural, and Community Services Director Mary Reedy and Economic Development Program Manager Nathan Daum presented the staff report and said the parcel is heavily forested and offers opportunities for ecological restoration and urban canopy preservation.
The purchase price, including associated costs such as demolition and site-stabilization fees, was stated as about $853,000. Staff said the full purchase will be funded with King County Conservation Futures Tax (CFT) funding, and that no Shoreline general fund or park-impact fees are being used for the acquisition.
Council members supported the acquisition during discussion, noting the parcel’s adjacency to existing city-owned parkland, the biodiversity and canopy benefits, and the opportunity to prevent development on the site. No public comment was received during the item-specific comment period. The council voted by roll call to approve the acquisition; the motion passed 6-0.
Next steps: the city manager was authorized to take necessary steps to complete the purchase. The city will proceed with ownership and subsequent concept planning and ecological restoration work as described in staff materials.
