Commissioners approve Santa Maria park colors, add River Drive to maintenance plan and clear annual beach cleanup permit

Cameron County commissioners approved several parks-related items affecting Santa Maria Community Park, county beaches and road maintenance serving park access.
The court approved color selections for the concession building, covered basketball court, picnic pavilion shade structures and court flooring at Santa Maria Community Park. Parks staff presented renderings showing blue, light gray and yellow colors to match the Santa Maria school district palette; Commissioner Reese moved to approve the selection and the motion carried by voice vote.
Separately, staff requested a minor revision to the 2025 road maintenance plan to add River Drive (the access road in front of Santa Maria Park) for fiscal year 2025–26 and to remove short segments (0.05, 0.07 and 0.12 miles) of Ballenger Road, Boyd Avenue and Bixby Road to offset the cost. Staff said the change is nearly cost-neutral and recommended approval; the court approved the amendment by voice vote.
The court also granted permission for the Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries program to host its annual shoreline cleanup at Adolph Tomay Junior County Park on Oct. 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with volunteers’ park entry fees waived during the event hours. Parks staff said the program has been a long-standing partner and the cleanup covers shoreline and nearby islands.
Parks director reported the department’s third-quarter revenue report showed the system overall had modest gains compared with the prior year; Andy Bowie Park revenue declined because of renovations but other park categories were up. The court acknowledged the report.
