Bradley County Road Department gives striping update; committee hears traffic and school-congestion requests

Bradley County Road Department staff gave an update on pavement striping and addressed several traffic requests at the Road Committee meeting on Thursday.
Milan Blake (prayer leader at the meeting) and Josh (road department staff) introduced the striping report. Road staff said the county had striped 73 miles this year and that about $108,000 remained in the current funding pot; the department estimated the existing funds would last through the end of the next fiscal year if similar work continues. "We've got 108,000 left in it," Josh told the committee, and staff said they had striped roughly 80 roads (about 73 miles) during the current program.
Committee members and residents raised several operational items:
- Bluegrass Circle: Residents asked the commission to consider lowering the speed limit from 25 mph to 15 mph because of tight spacing and driveway density. The committee agreed to place the request on the October agenda for formal action and sign/radar review.
- Minis (Minnis) Road and new firehall: The committee noted a formal request that the City consider taking a segment into city limits so the new fire station and road geometry can better handle school pick-up congestion. Commissioners said they had formally asked the city administration to review that transfer and would follow up.
- Hunt Road: A resident asked whether a four-way (stop) treatment at the Hunt Road/Gulf Drive intersection should be reinstated; staff said historical signage may have been removed and will review crash history and past traffic-control decisions.
Commissioner Sim Goodwin and other commissioners praised the road crews’ recent paving work in several districts. Staff also cautioned that federal guidance discourages use of traditional speed bumps on public roads — a point raised earlier during the Mowery Road discussion — and that certain traffic-calming devices have trade-offs.
No final binding budget decisions were made at the meeting. The committee directed staff to prepare traffic studies, signage estimates and notices so the items can be considered at the October meeting.
