The City of Tuscaloosa Zoning Board of Adjustments on Aug. 25 granted a variance allowing a pre‑constructed antique metal gazebo to be placed in the front yard at 46 Sherwood Drive.
Petitioner Kim Roberts told the board the gazebo is an antique structure built in the early 1900s and would be set on an existing concrete patio between the house and the road. Staff noted the property sits at the end of a cul‑de‑sac and showed that mature illex (holly) bushes and other plantings would shield the gazebo from street view.
Board members agreed that the existing landscaping and the cul‑de‑sac location limit visibility and traffic impact. The board approved the variance with a condition that the structure be covered in climbing greenery or otherwise blended with the approved landscaping so it remains concealed from the street.
Why it matters: The decision is an example of the board granting relief for accessory structures where landscaping and low visibility reduce impacts on sightlines and neighborhood character.
Ending: The petitioner may proceed to place the gazebo on the patio as approved; the stipulation requires maintained screening so the structure remains concealed from street view.
