The Pittsboro Welcome Center asked the board on Sept. 8 for $20,000 in town support to sustain operations and visitor services, including staffing a concierge desk, distributing maps and promoting downtown merchants and events.
Greg Lewis, representing the Welcome Center, described the center’s activities and funding model. He said the center opened in 2019 with town support (a façade grant and a proclamation), is supported by sponsorships and retail/space rentals, and that local realtors and event organizers use the space. Lewis said similar towns support their welcome centers: Sanford and Siler City were cited as examples where municipal funding is part of the center’s operating model.
Commissioners asked questions about hours of operation, partnership funding and performance expectations. Staff noted the town currently budgets about $240,000 in a downtown services line (previously used to support Main Street Inc.) and suggested the board could direct staff to negotiate an agreement specifying services, reporting and quarterly financials. The board did not adopt any appropriation at the meeting; instead commissioners asked staff to draft a formal agreement for future consideration and to consult the downtown advisory board.
Why this matters: a modest town contribution could support visitor services and downtown activation; commissioners emphasized fiscal restraint and asked staff to seek county participation and to draft measurable deliverables before any appropriation.
Provenance: public comment from Welcome Center leadership and board discussion during the Sept. 8 meeting.
