The Santa Clara City Council on Tuesday approved a second amendment to the city‑attorney employment agreement and adopted an updated unclassified salary plan.
What passed: The council approved a 4% cost‑of‑living salary adjustment for the city attorney retroactive to March 1, 2025, bringing the new annual salary reported in staff materials to $370,461.12; approved an employer contribution of $300 per month toward the employee’s deferred-compensation plan retroactive to Jan. 1, 2025; and directed a health‑benefit contribution alignment with Unit 9 benefits. Council also authorized the mayor to sign Amendment No. 2 to the city‑attorney employment agreement and adopted updates to the unclassified salary plan. The motion passed 5–1.
Fiscal note: Assistant City Manager Araceli Azevedo told the council the memorandum’s fiscal-impact paragraph lists an approximate total‑compensation estimate (staff cited an approximate total compensation of $564,000, which combines base salary, employer benefit contributions and other components). The council did not expand the salary-change debate; the item was approved on a motion by Council Member Albert Gonzales, seconded by Council Member Maitri Jain; the clerk recorded the vote as 5–1.
Recusal: The city manager announced he would recuse himself from advising on the subsequent item that related to his employment.
