Council lowers posted speed limits on priority safety corridors as part of Vision Zero actions

The San Jose City Council voted unanimously on Aug. 26 to adopt reduced posted speed limits on 23 roadway segments identified as Vision Zero priority safety corridors, following a traffic engineering analysis and updated authority from state law.

City Transportation staff said they used engineering surveys and roadway characteristics to set the new posted limits and that the changes are timed to support the city's planned deployment of automated speed enforcement cameras. John Ristau, Director of Transportation, told council the changes are intended to reduce crash severity and help the city meet Vision Zero goals.

Multiple councilmembers and public commenters said lowering posted speeds matters both for safety and for the effectiveness of forthcoming speed camera enforcement. Advocate Jordan Moldau told the council, “speed kills, not speeding,” and urged adoption. Staff said signs and outreach would be installed in September and further speed changes would be returned for council consideration later in the year.

The resolution was approved unanimously. Staff will follow with outreach (social media, council newsletters, changeable message signs) and a fall return showing additional segments to consider.
