Manaway police chief outlines training records and says officers exceed state minimums

Manaway — Chief Jared addressed the town council Aug. 21 to respond to community concerns about officer training and to summarize the department’s training records.
“The very first page…40 hours is what's required,” Chief Jared said, reading the Peace Officer Standards and Training requirement and noting the department’s record-keeping. He told the council that every officer must meet a 40-hour minimum in a fiscal year and that the department’s logged hours for the previous fiscal year ranged well above that minimum (examples Chief Jared provided included officers with 114.75, 62, 78, 125 and 83 hours in the stated period).
Chief Jared said some qualifying training—firearms qualifications and certain outside courses—had not yet been posted to the state reporting system and that staff were working with the state to ensure those hours are reported. He also said the department’s online training platform requires course tests to be passed at 80% or higher and that the department received an award for training record-keeping from its training vendor.
Council members praised the department’s professionalism. Chief Jared said the department coordinates training with nearby agencies for taser certifications, building-clearing exercises and active-shooter drills, and that most training is delivered via accredited online providers plus in-person practical sessions. He also pointed residents to the police-stats page on the town website for monthly call tallies and said August data would be posted by Sept. 5.
