House designates May as Chaldean American Month, passes bill 99-1 and orders immediate effect

The Michigan House of Representatives on Aug. 21 approved House Bill 4303 by a recorded vote of 99-1 to designate May of each year as Chaldean American Month and ordered the bill to take immediate effect.

Representative Arbitt, speaking in support on the floor, highlighted the Chaldean community's presence across Metro Detroit and the state. "Michigan boasts the largest Chaldean population in the United States," Arbitt said, urging colleagues to recognize the community's cultural and economic contributions.

Representative Robinson also spoke in favor and cited population and economic figures used by proponents. "Southeast Michigan is home to 185,000 Chaldean residents," Robinson said, noting community estimates that range between "183,000 and 187,000." Robinson added that studies estimate the Chaldean community contributes about $17.6 billion annually to Michigan's economy and that many households operate small businesses.

Earlier on the floor, Arbitt said community organizations have supported business formation and economic growth: "Since its inception in 2003, the Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce... has steadily supported the growth and development of over 25,000 Chaldean-owned businesses," Arbitt said, and attributed an $18 billion annual statewide contribution to the community.

The clerk announced the roll-call tally as 99 votes in favor and 1 opposed; the majority floor leader then moved and the House ordered the bill to have immediate effect.

The bill was introduced, read for second and third readings, and placed on immediate passage during the session. No amendments were recorded on the floor during third reading.
