The board recognized the Beatrice Teammates mentoring chapter at its Aug. 11 meeting for being named Southeast Region chapter of the year.
Board members and staff invited Christina Lyons and Laura Edmonds to the dais and described the Teammates program, founded in 1991 by Tom and Nancy Osborne. Staff said the school‑based mentoring program matches students in grades 3–12 with screened adult mentors who meet weekly during study hall or lunch to build relationships and support student success.
Speakers cited the local chapter’s board of nine adults (Bridal Rude, Dylan Kendall, Jamie Killian, Lisa Sand, Carrie Kendall, Amber Lovett, Joyce Wenzes Bauer, Connie Leach and Dakota Hurdley) and said the chapter received a reading‑literacy grant for the third year to support students in grades 3–8. Staff noted mentors will begin meeting with mentees after Labor Day to allow routines to be established.
"On behalf of Beatrice Public Schools, we thank you for all you do with the Teammates chapter and our kids," a board speaker said.
The board’s recognition was ceremonial; no financial action was recorded in the meeting transcript related to the award.
