Hermiston High ASB president outlines school-year calendar, leadership growth and special events

Mackenzie Davis, ASB leadership advisor at Hermiston High School, and Kate (Katherine) Doherty, Associated Student Body president, provided the board with student updates at the Aug. 11 meeting.
Davis said the leadership program now offers both a basic leadership course and an advanced class for returning leaders. "We are proud to continue the tradition of having a student representative attend the first board meeting of every month to share updates on events, accomplishments and activities at Hermiston High School," she told the board.
Doherty reviewed the school calendar: teachers return Aug. 18; the athlete back-to-school event is scheduled for Aug. 21 at 6 p.m. at Kennison Stadium; sport tryouts begin Aug. 25; open house will be Aug. 25 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.; the first day of school is Aug. 27 with a senior sunrise at 5:45 a.m., schedule pickup at 8:30 a.m., and a late start at 9:10 a.m. The first assembly is Aug. 29; school pictures are Sept. 2; fall competition begins the week of Sept. 1.
Doherty highlighted the Salute to Service football game on Sept. 5, which will admit veterans free, include a National Guard Chinook helicopter landing on the practice field, and involve the JROTC color guard. "All veterans will be admitted free of charge and will receive a custom commemorative ball cap as a small token of our gratitude and appreciation," she said.
The students said they will provide monthly updates to strengthen the board's connection to student life.
