Board approves Pivot Point curriculum for cosmetology CTE; staff to track licensure outcomes

The South San Antonio ISD Board of Managers voted to adopt the Pivot Point curriculum and online lab for the district cosmetology CTE program.
Jenny Lee Taylor, director of secondary education, described Pivot Point as "a foundational lab-aligned resource used to teach cosmetology, barbering, and aesthetics" that includes a digital lab, curriculum resources and licensing‑aligned test preparation. Taylor said the district's cosmetology enrollment is growing and that Pivot Point costs $99 per student compared with $125 per student under the previous Milady digital-access materials.
Taylor presented enrollment figures for the pathway: introductory cosmetology courses (level 1) had 81 students, introduction level 2 had 64 students, cosmetology level 3 had 41 students and cosmetology level 4 had 31 students; esthetician (levels 3–4) showed 15 students and is a new offering.
Trustees asked about retention into upper-level classes, students' ability to get required clinical hours (about 1,000 hours for licensing), and whether the district has data on past licensure pass rates under the previous curriculum. Taylor said staff will collect and report industry-based certification and licensing pass-rate data so the board can assess the program's effectiveness after implementation.
The board voted to approve the Pivot Point CTE cosmetology program as presented.
