The city has repainted crosswalks, removed some parking on Ohio to improve visibility and painted curbs; the crossing light is intended to add visibility and slow traffic during school periods.
City staff explained South Dakota law places responsibilities on both motorists and pedestrians in crosswalk situations. The proposed crossing light will be similar to other push-button installations used elsewhere in the city and was described as intended to increase safety when school resumes in the weeks ahead.
Commissioners approved the expenditure by roll call; funding will come from second-penny reserve funds.
