The Aurora City Council on July 28 heard several members of the public urge the return of in-person council meetings and direct public comment time. Multiple speakers said meetings should be held in person so constituents can be "seen" and speak from the podium rather than on virtual screens.
Public commenters raised concerns about decorum and First Amendment protections; some asked the council to restore in-person public comment specifically rather than limit opportunities to remote listening sessions. Speakers included neighborhood residents and activists who said in-person access is important for accountability and community engagement.
After public comment, Council Member Coombs moved to resume in-person council meetings beginning Aug. 11; Council Member Medina seconded. Supporters said in-person meetings improve deliberation and public engagement. Opponents said constituents still have multiple ways to contact council members, cited concerns about decorum and enforcement, and noted that recent virtual formats allowed orderly public participation.
The motion failed on a recorded vote: five yes votes and six no votes (the clerk read that the motion did not pass; the tally recorded five yes votes and six no votes from Council Members Bergen, Gardner, Jurinski, Casa, Lawson and Sundberg). Council discussion included references to reinstated public listening sessions and differing views about whether those sessions are an adequate substitute for public comment during the official meeting.
The council did not adopt a new rule at that meeting; staff said council members could raise changes to meeting structure or rules for the next meeting (Aug. 11).
