The Vicksburg-Warren School District board approved a new property and liability insurance package, renewed workers' compensation coverage, accepted the claims docket and approved several personnel and operational items during the regular meeting.
Insurance and workers' comp: Miss Hughes presented two insurance options from the district's broker and recommended switching to Berkeley for several coverages. She said the total premium for the year for the suite of coverages (general liability, law enforcement, school board liability, auto, property, crime, cyber and a new student-accident line) is about $1.78 million, which she described as roughly $175,000 lower than last year's coverage cost. Trustees approved the recommendation by motion.
The board also approved renewal of the workers' compensation policy through June 30, 2026, with no premium increase. Trustees said the board asked the broker to align workers' comp timing with the property insurance procurement so both would be handled concurrently.
Claims docket, disposals and stolen property: Trustees accepted the June claims docket and approved a capital assets disposal list generated by the spring audit. The board also approved a lost/stolen property affidavit for four Chromebooks that could not be located during the audit, and the district verified a campus police report and principal's affidavit were in the file.
Personnel and consent items: The board approved a consent agenda that included routine personnel recommendations and other consent items; the board approved adding Coach Pierce as assistant principal at Warren Central Junior High School by motion. Several consent items were pulled for discussion and later approved or tabled by the board as recorded in the minutes.
Construction updates: A facilities staff member provided construction updates. Multiple multipurpose building projects (Warrenton, South Park, Bovina, Redwood) and fencing projects are underway. The presenter said Vicksburg High, Vicksburg Junior and Redwood paving and punch-list work are complete and several auditoriums are finished. Bovina's project remains the most active and school officials said there may be temporary inconveniences for the start of the school year while contractors complete site work. The project manager, Mr. Stokes, flagged a buried storm shelter at Riverwood that required an unplanned change order for trenching and concrete removal; the board approved a change order under the superintendent's delegated threshold.
Board action: Trustees approved the insurance recommendation, the workers' comp renewal, the claims docket, capital disposals, lost/stolen property affidavit and personnel changes by voice vote. The board approved routine policy revisions and a set of policy actions and suspended rules to take immediate action on a handbook-related policy (IHA) after staff presented a committee review.
Next steps: Staff will finalize insurance documents and renewals, complete construction punch lists and return to the board with any outstanding change orders and a timeline for opening affected schools. Personnel hires and policy changes will be reflected in the official minutes and posted in the district HR and policy records.
