Parents, community groups press trustees on student safety, gun storage and door-to-door outreach

A Briscoe Middle School parent said her 10-year-old daughter lives about two miles from the campus and lacks a safe sidewalk route; she described a 45-minute, roadside walk along fast-moving roads and asked the district to treat the location as a hazardous-route exception so a bus stop could be added. Transportation staff told the speakers they would follow up and review hazardous-route exceptions.
Angie Yang, a parent, told trustees about a recent incident in which a student was detained and police found vaping devices and a handgun in a vehicle. Yang urged the district to use the opportunity to expand secure-gun-storage communications to parents, suggesting signed acknowledgments, community presentations and reminders at athletic events.
Northside AFT and neighborhood organizers described door-knocking events that reached hundreds of households to share information about schools and encourage neighborhood enrollment. A union organizer said volunteers knocked about 300 doors in one weekend and planned continued outreach and a public education forum Sept. 18.
Board response: Trustees and staff promised follow-up: transportation staff said they would check eligibility for hazardous-route exceptions, and administrators said they would follow up with the parent on the bus-stop question. Staff also agreed to follow up with the citizen who requested written responses on safety-related communications.
