Carson House leaders outline education, collections and new Heritage Center opening plans

Leaders of the Carson House told McDowell County commissioners on Tuesday that the historic site is expanding educational programming, completing a full artifact inventory and planning a grand opening for a newly renamed Heritage Center in spring 2026.
Theresa (Carson House director) said the museum and visitor center will be renamed the Heritage Center and that part of the facility will open with exhibits April 16, with other offices and special collections ready by July or August. She said the board completed an exhaustive inventory of hundreds of artifacts and is moving genealogical books and special collections into a new library.
Theresa described recent public and school programs, including live historical demonstrations at the William Moore cabin and a junior historian program partnership with local high school teacher Gun Shaw. "We have close to 500 children" attending recent school programs, she said.
She thanked partner organizations, including Destination McDowell and the McDowell County Historical Society, and said the site has a resident artist program and plans for authors and additional interpretation days. Theresa also said the Carson House plans to form a "Carson House descendants society" for direct-line descendants and that the property will host gatherings for descendant groups and African American community organizations to support local genealogy research.
No county funding request beyond previously discussed support was finalized during the presentation; the board heard the update and toured portions of the site after the meeting.
