McDowell County staff say 2027 property reappraisal is on schedule; 11,258 parcels visited so far

McDowell County officials said Tuesday that work on the 2027 property reappraisal is proceeding and that assessors have visited 11,258 of 32,793 parcels so far.
County staff presented an update to the Board of Commissioners outlining field work and the timeline for final values. "Everything seems to be going well," said Tammy, a county staff member presenting the update. She said assessors have taken images for more than 6,000 parcels and have received returned door-hanger cards from property owners.
The contractor representative, identified in the meeting only as Jeff, described field procedures. He said assessors use Surface Pro tablets that display a property card pulled from the county GIS and that inspectors attach the new photographic images to those property records. Jeff said the team is collecting sales information and other market data that will inform the schedule values presented to the board next year.
Tammy said changes identified during field work will be entered into a new reevaluation file; after review, that file will roll into the county's live tax records for use in 2027. "What will happen is we're going through right now looking for changes, additions, structures that's been torn down or whatever gone, and getting that corrected and then we'll go through with that entry," the county staff member said.
Officials said the contractor is not doing live updates to the public GIS map during the field work; images and revised data will be loaded in bulk later in the process for final review. Board members asked about when updated parcel images will appear on the county GIS and were told the team will upload the images toward the end of the job.
No new policy decisions or tax rates were set at the meeting; the board received the progress report for information.
