The Socorro City Council on Sept. 4 approved development and launch of a bilingual public-reporting campaign titled “If you see it, report it” designed to connect residents and city employees to the correct reporting pathways for potholes, illegal dumping, overgrown vegetation, streetlight outages and other neighborhood issues.
The initiative aims to reduce response delays by giving residents a clear toolkit — flyers, website content, social posts and QR codes directing people to the appropriate reporting platform — and by encouraging city employees and elected officials to report issues they encounter while working in the community. The council directed staff to produce materials in both English and Spanish.
Council members discussed past frustrations from residents who reported problems and saw little follow-up; one councilmember said repeated calls are sometimes necessary to get results and urged residents to call back if issues persist. The campaign will include contact information for utilities such as El Paso Electric when city staff cannot perform a repair directly (for example, streetlight fixtures on utility poles).
The motion to develop and launch the campaign passed by voice vote; staff will return with outreach materials and an implementation timeline.
