Council directs staff to begin nuisance-removal pilot on Alameda Avenue with TxDOT coordination

The Socorro City Council on Sept. 4 directed staff to begin a pilot program to remove nuisances and obstructions from major-arterial rights of way, starting with Alameda Avenue, and to coordinate the work with the Texas Department of Transportation.
The initiative will start with written notices to property owners adjacent to Alameda Avenue informing them they have 15 days to remove items, debris or other obstructions from the TxDOT right-of-way, after which city staff or TxDOT staff — as required by state rules — may remove and dispose of remaining items. The council asked staff to report back with cost and logistics information following the pilot.
Council members described recurring problems along Alameda, including large tractor tires used as advertising anchors, junked vehicles and equipment. The proponent said fines alone have not remedied the visual blight and that staff should pursue removal and disposal when property owners do not remedy violations after notice.
The motion to begin the pilot and coordinate with TxDOT carried by voice vote; the council did not record a roll-call tally on the record.
