Commission advances 2025 Teacher Summit planning; staff to open registration and manage logistics

The commission reviewed preparations for the 2025 Teacher Summit, confirmed logistical details and registration processes, and asked staff to proceed with outreach and registration.
Subcommittee chair Jim Dillard presented the proposed program and said most speaker bios and materials were in hand. Kristania (staff from VDOE history and social science) explained the registration form and timeline: the commission will run an article in the Virginia Education Update (planned for Aug. 28 or the following Thursday), open registration via a VDOE form linked from the commission page, and close registration in November so staff can provide final counts for catering and professional-development certification. Staff will send a teacher list to commission staff around Nov. 7.
Staff advised the commission to include a confirmation message and a contact email box on the registration form for teachers to notify staff if they cannot attend; staff will maintain a waiting list and can reassign seats if registrants cancel. Commissioners discussed capacity: the host museum provided a practical seating capacity of about 70, though commissioners recalled past events exceeding that number; members suggested exploring larger venues or remote/recorded delivery via Virginia Public Media or other partners. The commission asked staff to pursue recording and broader availability—Virginia Public Media was suggested for statewide reach.
Funding for the summit is drawn in part from the Dominion grant (approximately $15,464 remaining) and the commission’s recurring General Assembly appropriation. Staff said the Dominion grant has been used for the summit in prior years and is being depleted by recurring summit expenses. The commission asked staff to clarify the allowable uses and balances of both funding pots and to explore a budget amendment to secure recurring funding.
The commission requested that the subcommittee circulate the final agenda to the full commission and that commission members promote the event; several members volunteered to serve in outreach and to speak at the summit.
