The City of Fairfax Scribe Board opened its Sept. 29 work session by planning the agenda and logistics for a required joint meeting with the Fairfax County School Board in December, when Fairfax City will serve as host.
Board members said they will select a venue (Sherwood is being considered; Blenheim was judged too small), confirm whether the event will include a reception or a full dinner, and accommodate a pre-meeting musical performance by a Fairfax choral teacher. The city expects a formal work-session meeting with minutes and a recording, followed by a separate reception or dinner.
Members proposed potential agenda topics to raise with county counterparts, including the school services agreement (SSA), current boundary and capacity work tied to FCPS’s scenario planning, the City of Fairfax school bond, tuition and tuition‑increase management, and sharing costs related to Providence’s vestibule. The board also discussed including a legislative‑issues review so the two bodies can identify shared priorities after recent elections.
Board members noted timing constraints: FCPS’s boundary study is ongoing and scenario 4 from FCPS — which some members said is intended to address capacity issues — may not be finalized before the December meeting. Members advised caution about placing items on the agenda that depend on FCPS’s final scenarios. They also discussed inviting FCPS staff who can answer detailed questions (for example, about tuition calculations) if the board wants a substantive exchange on those topics.
Members identified logistical details to resolve: host responsibilities, space for county staff and board members, and whether to include a student performance and a reception or dinner prepared by a school culinary program. One member noted that the city technically is the host this year and therefore will set the agenda.
Next steps: staff will compile the ideas from the work session, update the draft agenda and logistics notes, and return the item for further review at a subsequent work session before the city’s chair presents the agenda to FCPS.
