The Evansville Police Commission on Aug. 11, 2025, approved the minutes from its July 28 meeting, certified scores from the department's July 2025 hiring process and voted to remove three applicants from the eligibility list, commissioners said during a brief meeting.
The meeting opened at approximately 4:26 p.m. and included Councilwoman Missy Mosby, Chief Phil Smith, Attorney Nick Siriano, Commissioner D.J. Thompson, Commissioner Dr. Johnson Kinkade, James Sutton (presiding), Sergeant Ben Brasher (filling in), and Secretary Joy Peters. The commission voted by voice to approve the July 28 minutes.
Commissioners then certified the results of the July 2025 hiring process. A motion to "certify the scores from the July 25 hiring process" was made, seconded and approved by voice vote, the commission recorded.
Separately, the commission voted to remove three applicants from the hiring list. The motion specified applicant numbers as "25-062," "25-131" and "25-107." The motion was made, seconded and carried by voice vote.
Chief Phil Smith informed the commission that Officer Jacob Hassler had been issued the department's lifesaver award for actions on June 23, 2025. The commission also recorded one resignation: Officer Justin Devine, badge number 1612, who is resigning effective Aug. 18, 2025, after serving "7 months and 5 days" with the Evansville Police Department, according to the commission record.
The commission noted there were no claims to approve and then adjourned. No formal vote tallies were recorded in the transcript; outcomes were recorded as voice votes with commissioners indicating "aye."
