City tables vote on ending Tulare County EDC membership after local EDC representative requests more time

During public comment and later in the meeting, an EDC representative urged the council to postpone action and offered to provide historical data on projects and the city’s long‑term investment. The representative said the city had paid $25,000 previously and that the increase to $35,000 occurred when membership dues across the county were adjusted; the representative offered to present receipts and historical performance data.
Council members expressed concern about taking action while two council members were absent and accepted a motion to table the item to the next meeting to allow staff and the EDC to meet and clarify the historical record; the motion passed 3–0. Council asked the city manager to arrange a meeting with the EDC and the vice mayor before the item returns to the council.
Staff said discontinuing membership would save $35,000 annually and that the city would pursue other locally focused economic development strategies if membership ended. The EDC representative requested time to demonstrate the program benefits and provide project examples.
