Lorain Education Association highlights community events, grants and member supports

Julie Garcia, president of the Lorain Education Association, reported to the Board of Education on Aug. 25 about union and community activities, grants and member supports conducted over the past school year.

Garcia described a range of events the LEA ran or supported, including a scholarship fundraiser ("Rocking Down the River") that raised more than $3,000, an annual breakfast with Santa, a trunk or treat, participation in the Blessing House gala and festival, a Jingle Bell run and teacher appreciation efforts. The LEA also distributed t‑shirts to all kindergarteners and currently enrolled freshmen as part of a grant provided through the Ohio Education Association, Garcia said.

Grants and donations: the LEA reported that a grant‑writing committee secured more than $250,000 in grants to support students and staff; Garcia also said the association received another $26,000 to support leadership training for new members. District staff present noted significant community donations to the schools from organizations including the American Legion and other local groups; one district official said donations from two social organizations on the board's list totaled roughly $20,000 for the month cited.

Partnerships and labor relations: Garcia said the LEA met with state and national education leaders, attended leadership training and sponsored social and union events. She said 42 district staff retired during the year and the LEA participated in welcome activities for new teachers.
