Sumner-Bonney Lake honors volunteers, staff and students including national FCCLA and DECA winners

The Sumner Bonney Lake School District recognized community volunteers, staff and student achievements at its Aug. 20 board meeting.
Volunteer recognition Superintendent Dr. Dent and board members recognized Carrie LaBlue and the Blessing Movement for coordinating a service project that painted 35 cottages at a Washington Soldiers Home and distributed hygiene care packages to residents. District staff and volunteers — including students — participated in masking, taping and painting during the multi-hour event. Speakers said the project also raised funds to provide scholarships: Carrie LaBlue reported the Blessing Movement has provided approximately $15,000 in scholarships to date.
Staff awards The district honored Jeff Wolf, Bonney Lake High School business and marketing teacher, who was named CTE staff member of the year by his peers. Presenters highlighted Wolf’s work with the school’s student store, DECA participation (including a record number of state participants) and career-readiness programming that helps students prepare resumes and interviews.
Student achievements at national competitions Bonney Lake High School FCCLA: Four students who attended national FCCLA competition in Orlando each earned at least one top-3 national placement; the chapter also received a national spotlight award (a $1,000 prize) for a project on distracted driving.
Sumner High School FCCLA and Educators Rising: Sumner sent 25 students to FCCLA nationals in Orlando — its largest showing to date — and returned with multiple top-10 national finishes, two national championships (parliamentary procedure and personal finance) and a range of challenge-test and star-event placements across categories including culinary, child development, hospitality/tourism, leadership and event management. The district also noted that staff who chaperoned and coached students took two groups to Orlando in quick succession, including the district’s first-ever participation in Educators Rising.
Why it matters: The recognitions underscore district partnerships with community groups, the scale of extracurricular career-and-technical education (CTE) programming, and student success in national competitions, which district leaders said helps with college and career readiness.
What speakers emphasized Board members and district staff praised volunteers and staff who supported the veterans’ project and the students who competed nationally. Presenters described the projects and competitions in detail, and the board thanked staff for organizing and supporting student participation.
