Reese said the district also partnered quickly with a local clinic to provide 25 free sports physicals for student athletes when an initial plan faced challenges.
"We eliminated participation fees and now provide transportation for summer and fall activities leading up to the school year," Reese said. He added the district's rapid pivot to a local clinic allowed 25 students to receive free physicals within 24–48 hours and that transportation was provided from the activities office to ensure no student was left behind.
Reese said initial sign-ups for activities increased after eliminating the fees, and he reported interest from other districts seeking to replicate Fridley's approach. Board members noted the removal of fees and the transportation support will reduce barriers to participation for students who lack rides or funds.
The district did not present a detailed fiscal plan for covering the program costs at the meeting; Reese said the district expects the change will boost participation and planned marketing and outreach to share the new program.
