The board approved an extension academy membership allowing Helix Community Schools to operate an extension academy in the City of Baker.
Department staff described extension academies as settings that give students who have met graduation requirements extra time and supports to prepare for college or the workforce. “These are students who have met all the graduation requirements, but they're not quite there in terms of being prepared to enter into college or get some sort of credential,” a department presenter said.
A motion to approve the extension academy was made, seconded and approved with no exceptions recorded on the transcript. A local representative thanked the board and urged support, saying the program helps bridge a gap for graduates who otherwise may leave school without a path to college or career.
The board recorded the approval and staff said they will continue to work with Helix and local partners as the program operates.
