Board debates proposed cuts to activities and athletics; motion to restore spring dance coach fails

Athletics director and administration representatives explained the matrix changes were driven by alignment with conference and state practices and by building-level participation and staff interest. The proposal included adding a girls varsity wrestling head coach and eliminating the spring session for dance to better align seasons and manage district resources.
Board Members debated the trade-offs. Megan Miller and Amy Levy moved to approve the addendum matrix but preserve the spring dance head-coach slot; they argued the spring season supports student fundraising and educational opportunities. Opponents said alignment with other districts and limited staff interest justified the change.
The roll-call vote to approve the addendum matrix with the restored spring dance position failed, 2–4 (Aye: Amy Levy, Megan Miller; Nay: Tom Hankins, Brian Nichols, Juan Romero, Tia Johnson). Administration said principals had been consulted and that eliminations reflected low participation or lack of staff leaders for some activities. The board did not adopt the revised matrix as amended and asked athletics and principals to review participation and return with options.
