Resident urges monthly reading of veterans' citations and county flag display at meetings

HARNETT COUNTY — During public comment a resident asked the Board of Commissioners to adopt a monthly tradition of reading one veteran’s citation at each commission meeting and to display the Harnett County flag in the meeting chamber and on the Lucius building.
‘‘On the last public commissioner's meeting … I like to have this as a separate agenda from the comment period. And it's just 1 time a month, 1 hero that we read their citations,’’ Larry Mitchell told commissioners. Mitchell said the county’s ‘‘wall of heroes’’ is located downstairs by the veteran services office and that volunteers and veterans would be willing to read citations; he also suggested including deputies and firefighters who died in the line of duty.
A commissioner asked county staff (referred to in the meeting as Brent) to return at the next meeting or work session with a plan for how the board might implement reading citations and displaying the county flag. The commissioner said that could be discussed at the next work session.
The request did not result in a formal vote. County staff or the responsible department was asked to prepare details and present options at a future meeting.
"We need to have the public see the Harnett County flag," Mitchell said.
