Director reports steady academic gains, strong AP results and facility projects underway

Mike Wynne, director of schools, gave the board an overview of preliminary achievement and program updates. He said the district’s five-year trend analysis shows steady growth in English language arts, math and social studies since 2021; he noted science remains an area needing improvement and the district has purchased new science curriculum aimed at increasing performance.
Wynne presented Advanced Placement (AP) results from Stewart County High School: six students took AP U.S. history and all six scored a 3 or higher; 16 students took AP calculus with about half scoring a 3 (above national average for that cohort, per Wynne); 35 students took AP precalculus and 91% scored a 3 or higher; and one student took AP world history and scored 3 or higher. Wynne explained that a score of 3 or above typically earns three hours of college credit for that course.
On facilities and extracurriculars, Wynne reported the district replaced the auditorium curtain and is renovating the stage floor (an Eagle Scout project supported by district-provided materials). The auditorium roof is not currently leaking; dressing-room work is planned next. Wynne also said the district is working on parking and accessible routes for ball fields and expects a plan by spring.
Wynne said the middle school may now participate in high-school fishing teams; the high-school coach has agreed to take on middle-school anglers. He also said the district will video board meetings and upload recordings the day after meetings (not livestream). Wynne closed by sharing that the central office audit exit resulted in zero findings and no recommendations.
Board members asked clarifying questions about AP test retakes and scheduling. Wynne said students can retake an AP test without taking the course again if they choose to, and that students may repeat an AP course for a different outcome but district practice varies. Wynne emphasized that final growth data and district letter grades will be released later in the year.
