Roseville’s FAB 50 program grows membership, adds classes and day trips

Kirsten Kilmer, recreation coordinator, reported to the Roseville Senior Commission on Aug. 13 that the city’s FAB (50 and Better) program is expanding membership and programming.
Kilmer said the program now has "nearly 400 active FAB members," up from roughly 325 a year earlier, and described more than 35 regular activities at the Maidu Community Center and the Mahaney Fitness Center, including games, discussion groups, support groups and social events.
Why it matters: FAB programming is a core city offering for residents 50 and older, providing social connection, fitness and service referrals. Kilmer said the department uses member feedback to design new sessions and highlighted fall additions including a weekly craft series at Mahaney and partnered pickleball and beginner tennis classes at Woodbridge Park.
Kilmer described FAB day trips and appreciation events — recent trips included a Sacramento River cruise and a performance at Sacramento Music Circus — and announced upcoming visits to the Crocker Art Museum (Sept. 12) and Apple Hill (Oct. 28). She said the program recently hired three drivers to run day-trip transportation in-house, which has reduced the cost for members and provides a familiar driver for participants.
Kilmer also reviewed Puzzlepalooza, a recurring puzzle competition that drew roughly 25 teams and about 100 participants per event this year. She encouraged intergenerational participation at an Oct. 10 Halloween-themed Puzzlepalooza (tickets available online and at PRL facilities) and noted the FAB newsletter lists events and sign-up information.
Commissioners asked procedural and technical questions about links and communication; staff said contact details and the FAB newsletter are available at PRL facilities and online. No formal commission action was taken on the presentation.
