Board authorizes $41,589 hoist repair for transportation shop, citing safety needs

The Harper Creek Board of Education voted 7–0 on Aug. 11 to authorize a bid to repair the district transportation hoist after administrators said a cylinder in the hoist rear had failed and the equipment requires substantial repair to allow safe vehicle maintenance.
Superintendent Jim Ridgeway told the board the damaged hoist is necessary to lift buses for routine maintenance and that repair is not optional. "Basically, the back end, the rear of the hoist cylinder broke in the floor. So we have to cut cement out, all kinds of different things, put a new cylinder in. And, unfortunately, it's a cost of $41,589.40," Ridgeway said. He recommended awarding the work to American Hoist and Lube and a 5% contingency to cover possible additional work.
Ridgeway said the district typically seeks multiple bids but that this vendor is the only known local provider that performs hoist rebuilds; the district has used the vendor in the past. He and Finance Director Ginger Obermeyer said outsourcing bus repairs to another service would likely increase cost significantly.
Board members voted to authorize the contract, with the motion carrying 7–0.
Ending: Administration will finalize contracting with American Hoist and Lube and proceed with repairs promptly so the transportation shop can continue bus maintenance before the school year ramp-up.
