City staff updates Planning Commission on Unified Development Ordinance audit and next steps

City planning staff updated the Planning Commission Aug. 11 on the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) audit and next steps.
Staff said the consultant team has reviewed more than 1,100 pages of regulations and met with 11 focus groups in spring to gather topic-specific feedback (downtown, commercial, multifamily, Board of Zoning Appeals, etc.). Staff noted a technical advisory panel (including Commissioner Haynes) met July 22, and the Committee of the Whole discussed foundational questions Aug. 4. Topics flagged for attention included zoning-district structure, relief mechanisms and open-space policy. The consultant team is preparing an audit report and a market study to help frame mixed-use regulations.
Staff directed commissioners to the UDO update web page (opkansas.org/udoupdate) for materials and said the team will return with recommendations in the near future.
No formal action was required; the update was informational.
