Commission approves Sanders Justice Center training facility plan, 9-0

The Overland Park Planning Commission unanimously approved Preliminary Development Plan PDP 2025-22 on Aug. 11 for a new 34,611-square-foot training facility at the Sanders Justice Center (12400 Foster Street).
Staff said the training building is proposed adjacent to the existing Sanders Justice Center and will add 11 parking spaces, a new drive and sidewalks; total site building area would reach about 113,831 square feet with 325 parking spaces across the campus if a future building is added. The plan includes a 6-foot ornamental steel fence for security along the south/west areas near judges’ chambers and other sensitive facilities.
Tony Rome, the city’s facilities engineer, and police leadership were present to describe the function; Rome said the building location supports future courthouse planning and cross-connectivity. Staff recommended approval subject to stipulations A through K. Commissioner Wei moved approval and the motion passed 9-0. The item goes to City Council Sept. 8 for final action.
Vote details: motion to approve PDP 2025-22 with stipulations A–K passed 9-0.
