Planning Commission backs Children’s Mercy outpatient expansion, 9-0

The Overland Park Planning Commission on Aug. 11 unanimously approved a revised preliminary development plan (PDP 2025-17) for a Children’s Mercy medical office building and lobby extension on the hospital campus, forwarding the project to City Council.
Staff described the proposal as a 125,998-square-foot medical office addition and a lobby expansion with a parking deck that maintains the previously approved parking total (772 spaces combined among surface lots and the deck). The site remains in the CPO (planned office) district and maintains the hospital’s permitted hospital/special-use designation.
Staff said the project meets the city’s Framework OP regional-activity guidance, and that traffic and stormwater analyses were provided and reviewed. Staff recommended approval subject to stipulations A through L.
Children’s Mercy representatives said the work is part of a campus modernization and consolidation of ambulatory services to improve patient flow and experience. Commissioners praised the design and investment; Commissioner Reyes moved approval and the motion passed 9-0. The council will consider the application on Sept. 8.
Vote details: motion to approve PDP 2025-17 with stipulations A–L passed 9-0.
