District awarded Kansas Forestry Service grant to plant roughly 46 trees at Oak Lawn Elementary

Derby Public Schools announced Aug. 4 that Oak Lawn Elementary was awarded a Kansas Forestry Service community grant to plant an estimated 46 trees on school grounds.
The grant will reimburse the district for planting costs; the administration told the board the project budget is $31,298.59 for plant material and planting. The planting plan submitted with the grant places trees around the playground and parking area, said the presenter; the contractor listed for the project is Bryant Landscapes and the district will be responsible for maintenance after installation.
Attorney Calvin Ryder reviewed the agreement and made requested edits prior to the award, administrators said. The district described the trees as Kansas-hardy species with initial planting sizes that include 2-inch caliper material and some 8-to-10-foot clump maples and junipers.
Operations staff said the grounds crew will water the trees initially using water bags and a refill tank mounted on a district truck. The board did not record a separate vote on the grant in the meeting transcript; the administration presented the award and answered questions.
