City staff reviewed summer special events, the community survey and several upcoming public-art and engagement initiatives during the Neighbor Engagement and Inclusion Advisory Commission meeting on July 28 in Anna, Texas. Commissioners voted unanimously to move a proposed nonprofit resource directory to the next meeting for formal action.
A city staff member identified in the meeting as Taylor summarized summer outreach: the second annual Multicultural Night held with Anna ISD, a youth engagement day that attracted four participants, a Touch-a-Truck event, a Juneteenth celebration on June 14, the Boots and Booms concert series (identified as the largest since the city assumed it from the chamber), and a back-to-school bash offering backpacks, eye exams and haircuts.
Taylor told the commission the community survey is open online and that some residents will receive a mailed, statistically sampled paper survey. “If you do get a paper mailed survey, so there’s some two parts to this,” Taylor said during the report. Staff said results are expected in September and will be presented to the commission in the fall for comparison with a survey conducted three years earlier.
Staff and interns discussed public-art opportunities, including a proposal to paint elevated manhole covers (called “portals”) along the Pecan Grove Trail and an open call for library-area art timed with the new library’s opening. Keeley McGrath described research into other cities’ display cases and public-art programs and said the city will open an artists’ call on Aug. 15.
Commission business and votes: The commission unanimously approved the minutes from the April 28, 2025 meeting. Later in the agenda, Commissioner Jody Foster moved to forward a proposed nonprofit resource directory for staff research and to place it on the commission’s next meeting as an action item; the motion passed unanimously.
Staff flagged additional items for future commission work: finalizing the ADA transition plan in coordination with TxDOT, continued work on portal/public-art engagement, sponsorship and donation policy language for city-accepted contributions, and cultural and heritage recognition tied to the opening of the new library. The commission’s next meetings were set for Aug. 25 and Sept. 22, with AnnaFest noted for Oct. 4.
Ending: Staff said more detailed materials, including the interns’ presentation and draft databases, will be circulated to commissioners ahead of the August meeting so members can prepare for action.
