Appearance Commission tables creative-crosswalks proposal for six months to study maintenance

The Selma Appearance Commission on July 21 discussed a proposal from public works to install decorative or "creative" crosswalks in town and voted to table further action for six months while staff investigates maintenance needs and scheduling.

Commissioners heard from Dalton (staff) and noted Terry Johnson of the public works team submitted the idea. "I have the slides up on the TV, but I do know that there was, I don't wanna say concerns, but I know there was some issues with maintenance that we were considering, to make sure that after 6 months or a year, it was still in the condition it wasn't. It was first laid down," Dalton said, describing concerns about wear and long-term upkeep.

Commissioners discussed design choices and maintenance trade-offs: simpler motifs such as musical notes or footprints were described as easier to maintain than multi-colored "rainbow" designs. One commissioner suggested prioritizing signage and flower-bed projects first and returning to crosswalks later. Another suggested locating themed designs near businesses, mentioning a musical-theme crosswalk in front of On Beat Drum Studio.

By motion, the commission directed staff to pause further work and to revisit the crosswalk proposal in six months; the motion to table was made by Miss Smith, seconded by Miss Rainer, and approved by voice vote recorded as "Aye." The commission also earlier amended the agenda at the start of the meeting to add the creative-crosswalks item as 6(a) and to table commission-application items until the next meeting on Aug. 1.

Staff will return with maintenance recommendations and cost/priority information when the commission takes up the item again.
