Holly Glen principal outlines reading, math and wellness goals tied to iReady data

At the Oct. 9 Wiseburn Unified School District board meeting, Holly Glen Elementary Principal Kiana Clark presented site priorities (reading, math, science, and student wellness/safety) and baseline iReady diagnostic results that will guide instruction and support.

Clark said the school is using iReady diagnostic data to "guide personalized instruction and most importantly to monitor the progress." She described end-of-year targets: 80% mastery in phonics for first grade and 80% mastery in comprehension for second grade, and 80% mastery in number-and-operations for first-grade math and in algebraic-thinking for second-grade math.

Clark reported early-year iReady snapshots: for first-grade reading, 27% of students were at or above midgrade level (tier 1), 64% were one grade level below (tier 2) and 8% were two grades below (tier 3). For second grade reading, Clark said 39% were mid-or-above, 41% one grade level below and 20% two grades below. Math baselines were lower: first grade number-and-operations tier 1 at 23%, tier 2 at 67% and tier 3 at 11%; second grade algebraic thinking tier 1 at 44%, tier 2 at 48% and tier 3 at 8%.

Clark said the school will use MyPath individualized learning paths, targeted "Win Time" small-group instruction, coaching cycles with a math specialist and classroom observation opportunities to reach its goals. She described an iReady representative who met one-on-one with campus leaders to set realistic targets and who will return to celebrate progress with students.

Trustees commented supportively, noting the ambition of the 80% targets and reminding the audience that the October numbers are a baseline early in the school year. Trustee commentary emphasized using the diagnostics to set and revise realistic goals over the year.
