Public objection at Fountain Hills meeting over proposal to name community center after Charlie Kirk

Several Fountain Hills residents used public comment at the Oct. 7 council meeting to object strongly to a proposal to name the town community center after conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

Wendy Dackel told council members she found the idea "abhorrent," citing public statements by Charlie Kirk and saying, "Leave our community center alone. It's not a political puppet for you." Dackel listed a series of controversial statements she attributed to Kirk and urged the council not to move forward with any naming plan tied to him.

Other public speakers raised related concerns about religious statements from the dais and the tone of some council members’ remarks during earlier meetings. Shelby Blecker and another commenter urged the council to prioritize nonpartisan civic governance and said they were concerned about recent council rhetoric.

Near the end of the meeting, Vice Mayor Skilcorne raised a future agenda item to rename the community center to the "Charlie Kirk Freedom Center" dated Sept. 10, 2027; he said he would second that motion for consideration in two years. That later remark was made during the "future agenda items" portion of the meeting and did not represent a current council action. No formal nomination, resolution or vote to change facility names occurred that evening.

The town did not take any naming action during the meeting. Public commenters and some council members emphasized the difference between public comment expressions and formal council actions; several speakers urged the council to focus on shared civic activities. The council chair did not add a naming ordinance or resolution for immediate consideration; instead the exchange concluded with the meeting adjournment.
